Evanston, Illinois

The challenge here was to transform what was likely once a side entrance into a welcoming front entrance, and to provide a new garage where there was formerly none – all while retaining the charm and character of the original house in Evanston’s Northeast Historic District.

A generous porch and a wide set of stairs, detailed with columns and balustrades in keeping with those original to the house, welcome visitors to what is now, unmistakably, the front door. The garage is located adjacent to the house, and echoes its trim work along with the style and slope of its roof, so that what could have been a mundane outbuilding instead serves to enhance the home and define the yard.
